Thessaloniki is the second-largest city in Greece, the capital of the Macedonia region. Founded on the 3rd century BC and named after the stepsister of Alexander the Great, Thessaloniki is now a vibrant, modern city with a population of 1 million people and an important educational hub with 4 universities, among which Greece’s largest university, the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.
It is considered Greece’s cultural capital, renowned for its festivals, events and its cultural life in general and has recently been ranked by National Geographic Travel in the top 10 Nightlife Cities.
More importantly, it is also a city with a continuous 2,300 years of history. As a crossroad of civilizations and cultures the city preserves relics of its Roman, Byzantine, Ottoman past and of its formerly dominant Jewish population. Many of its Byzantine churches and a whole district of the city, are included in UNESCO’s World Heritage list. Furthermore, Thessaloniki is considered a gourmet city for the Greek cuisine. Makedonia Airport
Thessaloniki’s International Airport “Makedonia” is the second biggest in Greece. In the summer, it gets quite busy and connects with almost all European countries with direct flights as Thessaloniki and Halkidiki are prime tourist destinations. You will find a selection of legacy and low-cost carriers that fly to a wide range of European cities. Aegean Airlines, Ryanair, Air Berlin and Turkish Airlines are some of the airlines with the highest frequency in Thessaloniki Airport.

Train Connection
Unfortunately, there are currently no international train connections to Greece. It is possible to take a ferry from Italy to Greece (e.g. from Bari to Patra) and then travel by train to Thessaloniki via Athens. There are also some international bus connections to Thessaloniki (e.g. from Skopje or Sofia).
While in the city
Thessaloniki offers a wide range of experiences for the modern traveler at a fraction of the cost compared to other European cities. Without any compromise in quality, the visitor can easily transfer, visit sites, enjoy the culinary tradition or even shop at numerous spots all around the city. Moreover, the perfect June weather allows for extensive city discovery. Warm, completely sunny days and mild nights offer the perfect combination to enjoy the most of the city. Indicatively:
• Food: Thessaloniki is probably one of the best Mediterranean destinations to enjoy exceptional cuisine in affordable prices. There are hundreds of taverns everywhere in the city; in cobblestone alleys, along the waterfront, in open-air gardens that offer a wide range of Greek delicacies and spirits. Lunch including wine or ouzo will cost approximately €10-15. For those interested in savouring a gourmet Greek dish, there are also high end restaurants to satisfy the most demanding customer. Lunch in such a restaurant will cost approximately €15-25. Greek street food is all around the city. Gyros is an absolute must-eat delicacy and costs no more than €4.
• Miscellaneous: Convenience kiosks are located literally everywhere in the city and will provide visitors with all they may need during their day. Indicatively, a bottle of water costs €0.50, refreshments and chocolate bars are €1. Coffee drinking becomes a whole new experience in one of the numerous cafes of the city, at €2 for take away and €4-5 for dine-in. Trying a freddo espresso/capuccino is a must! Summer nights in Thessaloniki are very lively. Locals and tourists meet in open air bars and enjoy the warm weather. A bottle of beer costs approximately €4-5 at a bar or €2 from a kiosk.
